When you're online, your WiFi connection uses radio waves to carry information between your computer and wireless devices like tablets and smartphones. Almost all broadband providers today use the same radio frequency band, 2.4GHz.
2.4GHz is a bit like a busy highway. With so many people using the same frequency band at the same time, it will cause congestion and slow down the transmission of information. It can also be affected by other factors, such as microwave ovens and DECT phones, since they also operate on the same frequency band.
As a general rule, the 5GHz band has a shorter range but is ideal for demanding activities like downloading large files. The 2.4GHz band is better for longer distances, but is more susceptible to interference. An easy way to make sure you're getting the best possible connection is to check your wireless manager and check the connection strength by the number of bars displayed.
If your device is 5GHz compatible, it will automatically select the 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi network name (SSID). All you have to do is select a 5GHz SSID for compatible devices! If your device is not 5GHz compatible, your only option is to connect to a 2.4GHz SSID. Also great is that you can connect multiple devices simultaneously on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, so all your devices have access to the best WiFi available. To access, you simply click on the WiFi network name (SSID) ending in "2G" or "5G" in Wireless Manager, enter your WiFi password and it's up and running in no time.
Dual Band routers have the capability to transmit both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz wireless bands. There are two types of dual band routers – concurrent and selectable.
Concurrent Dual Band | Selectable Dual Band |
Twice the bandwidth | Same bandwidth as a single band router |
Dedicated WiFi network for Video/Gaming and light WiFi use | Single WiFi network for all devices – Not different than single band routers |
Separate networks avoid interference | Single network is more crowded |
Two separate WiFi networks operating simultaneously | Selectable single band wifi network – either 2.4GHz or 5GHz |
Concurrent WiFi is mostly used in enterprise surroundings, or places where high quality and availability of WiFi is needed, for example where clients have a lot of video calls, video streaming, gaming needs, etc. For those situations 5HGz is used, and for everything else that needs less bandwidth 2.4GHz is used simultaneously.
One downside do 5GHz is that it has a bit shorter range, but still, it’s great for demanding activities.
