Traditional system and software development is commonly divided in two main areas: front-end analysis and design, and back-end implementation and test, strung together serially. CASE tools were originally created to automate the planning and analysis phase. While some of these tools provided some design capture ability, and minimal code frame generation, none linked the design to the implementation and the documentation. This disconnect continues today in that as soon as the requirements specifications are handed down, the system architecture begins to deviate from the specifications. Most often this is because the requirements are ambiguous, consequently, these propagations are handed down into further phases of development. If that isn't enough, as soon as coding begins, the implementation more often than not diverges from the design documentation, introducing another disconnect, increasing project risk, lowering overall system quality and maintainability, and lengthening the development lifecycle. Equally, since CASE tools were oblivious to behavior, they did nothing to solve the trauma of system integration. Since behavior is unknown until system integration, this phase is normally a hot spot in the development life cycle. It only gets worse when the pressure to increase functionality, improve quality and keep to schedule with fewer resources drives development teams to take risky short-cuts in attempts to recover time. Whether the team is disciplined or in free fall, one thing is certain, waiting until the end of the development cycle to first address behavior adds incredible risk to the process. It is odd that chip designs are validated continually during the development process while software validation is postponed until the very end. It is no wonder that hardware design productivity improves at a high rate while software productivity is stuck at essentially the same level year after year.
