What is “Downloadable Firmware”? Downloadable firmware is a feature that permits an embedded product’s firmware to be updated electronically with new code delivered by a serial port, network connection or other electronic means instead of by replacing a chip. This capability can be used in many ways. For example, having downloadable firmware makes it easier to provide firmware updates to products already in the hands of end users by allowing the new code to be delivered via serial port, modem or other electronic means. This in-the-field reprogrammability can also be of value even before the product leaves the factory, because with it comes the possibility to fully assemble and test a device with specialized test firmware, then install the application firmware just before the product is sold, without disturbing the unit mechanically to replace chips.
